Edinburgh Zoo has announced the launch of its new Penguins Rock Appeal to help finance the construction of a new £750,000 enclosure for its penguins.
The attraction's existing outdoor penguin pool - one of the largest in Europe - is around 60 years old and will now undergo a major programme of maintenance and modernisation.
Plans include a complete visual makeover with interactive elements, slides and diving boards, as well as the installation of enhanced interpretation and new viewpoints.
Edinburgh Zoo is seeking to raise £100,000 through its new appeal, with the majority of the work to start in September. The remaining cash will come from a range of other sources.
Darren McGarry, the zoo's head of animals, said: "After leaks started to appear in the main pool earlier this year, we took the decision to perform extensive maintenance work.
"Edinburgh Zoo will also carry out a total visual redevelopment as well, creating a new 21st century exhibit that both our penguins and visitors will love."
